Who is afraid of green?

Markus Guschelbauer *1974

The identity of a culture, a country or people is often derived from the way these people have been dealing with their specific landscape. Markus shows us a confrontation between nature and culture by staging almost stigmatized elements of both. In the Cultureland residency he chooses the Stijl as the archetypical cultural expression. He constructs an icon of this famous art movement and confronts it with its own origin, the man-made landscape. The results are shown in an interdisciplinary presentation of video, photography and objects.

Markus Guschelbauer (1974) is a visual artist based in Vienna, Austria. He makes site-specific work using photography, video and installations. Raised on a farm, his approach to the subject of landscape is personal and warmhearted. Its depiction within the Fine Arts, as well as the theoretical and practical discourse on nature stand at the centre of his artistic practice. Guschelbauer has exhibited in Austria, Sweden, Slovenia, UK and in the USA.
